The Grounds

One of the highlights of the Canyon Club Hotel is its beautiful outdoor pool area. It’s the perfect spot to soak up the warm California sun or take a refreshing dip, surrounded by lush palm trees and colorful loungers. The hotel also features a hot tub, sauna, steam room, and fitness center, allowing guests to rejuvenate and indulge in some self-care.

For those seeking socializing and entertainment, the hotel offers various opportunities to connect with fellow guests. Occasional events and themed parties create a fun and friendly environment.

The Canyon Club was called the La Fonda Hotel when it opened in the 1950s. It was owned by Leo Fine. He and his wife had previously owned the Del Marco Hotel. They sold it in 1967. In the 1990s, it became the gay resort Canyon Boy’s Club.

Canyon Boys Club closed down in 2003, and the property’s owners had plans to tear down the existing midcentury buildings and combine the adjoining lot to build high-end condominiums. Luckily, in 2005, New York City native John Halderman purchased both the main property and adjoining lot and kept them completely intact. Halderman had owned Laguna Beach’s historic and beloved gay bar Boom Boom Room from 1990 to 2000, so he came in with a good track record. The hotel experienced a complete gut-job, including all the rooms and even the pool, thanks to Chris Guyer, Halderman’s partner and a professional carpenter.
