Leading Edge Palm Springs Art Museum A+D Center Thu, November 8, 2018 Things To Do Add to trip Remove from trip Share: Showcasing Palm Springs Architecture The Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center, Edwards Harris Pavilion, also known as the A+D Center, was acquired by the museum in 2011. It is showcased as a Class 1 Historic Site located above street level with a mid-century design by E. Stewart Williams. The storied building was once home to the prominent Santa Fe Federal Savings & Loan. The rehabilitation was overseen by preeminent Los Angeles architecture firm Marmol Radziner. They were known for the restoration of the famed Kaufmann House and Ship of the Desert residence, both in Palm Springs. The firm based its restoration designs on black-and-white photographs of the building taken by Julius Shulman, as well as Williams’ original drawings. Glass & Steel The A+D Center is composed of glass and steel marked with aluminum screens and glorious panoramic views of the mountains. Renovations have elevated its aesthetic with unique desert landscaping, contemporary open spaces and an elevator. The museum holds significant portions of the Albert Frey, E. Stewart Williams, Arthur Elrod/Harold Broderick, and Hugh Kaptur archives. The collection also includes Frey House II, the historically significant residence in Palm Springs that architect Albert Frey designed for himself in 1963. It was bequeathed to the museum upon his death in 1998. Accessible to All “We want to ensure that our growing collection is accessible to architects, scholars, and the general public. And, we want to develop more programming focused on architecture and design, including current innovations in these fields,” said Sidney Williams. She is the museum’s founding curator of architecture and design. The A+D Center supports both historic and modern architecture, artistic design and pivotal platforms to benefit the public in these noteworthy fields. The Friends of the Architecture and Design Center as well as the Architecture and Design Council oversee its leading edge programming and special events. 300 South Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262 Exploring Palm Springs Architecture POPULAR Mid-Century Architecture Self-Guided Tour Palm Springs Hiking Guide Palm Springs COVID-19 Guidance More From Things To Do View All Posts Take a Tour with Modern Tours Palm Springs Sponsored The Modern Tour Palm Springs is a self-driving tour that takes you through the… Read More The Waterfalls of Palm Springs Canyons Looking at the San Jacinto Mountains, you wouldn’t think water streams were tumbling over rocks… Read More Desert X 2023 Guide Come See Art Across the Desert Landscape, March 4 – May 7 Eleven artists from… Read More
