Palm Springs 40th Anniversary Vocal Competition

This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the Palm Springs Vocal Competition. This year’s competition will take place at the Rancho Mirage Library & Observatory at 1:00 PM on December 2. The competition has been a pillar of the Palm Springs Opera Guild’s activities since 1983, and has become on of the community’s most beloved annual events. Past winners have gone on to hugely successful operatic careers. This year, Eight talented finalists will vie for first place, which comes with the opportunity to be featured in a solo recital and a $10,000 top prize.

This year’s eight finalists are mezzo-soprano Ashlyn Brown; soprano Mary Hoskins; baritone David Le; mezzo-soprano Lindsay Martin; soprano Tessa McQueen; soprano Krista Renée Pape; tenor Xavier Prado; and tenor Emesh Wijewardena. This year’s program includes favorites like “Che gelida manina” from Puccini’s La bohème, The Jewel Song from Gounod’s Faust, “Una voce poco fa” from The Barber of Seville, as well as more unusual fare including arias from Jake Heggie’s Two Remain, Massenet’s Chérubin, and Verdi’s Il corsaro. The competition will be adjudicated by guest judges Josh Shaw, James Darrah, and Brian Asher Alhadeff.
