Just Fabulous Celebrates 10 Glorious Years of Retail Bliss -- as Only Palm Springs Can
Champagne, music, dancing, over-the-top entertainment -- Just Fabulous (www.bjustfabulous.com) – Palm Springs’ go-to boutique for everything “oh so Palm Springs” – celebrated 10 years of retail bliss on April 8, 2017. And the party was, of course, fabulous.
Like the store itself, the 10th anniversary festivities were Palm Springs all the way. The local favorite Gand Band, with drummer Sal and singer Dion; top female impersonators Cherilyn, Sassy Ross and Candace Camera entertained and Bella Da Ball emceed, while locals and visitors danced, sipped champagne, and enjoyed wine and light bites from Just Fabulous’ new neighbor the Mod Café (http://www.mymodcafe.com). Palm Springs Mayor Pro Tem Ginny Foat proclaimed April 8 & 9 “Just Fabulous Weekend” and presented Stephen Monkarsh, founder and owner of Just Fabulous, with a city proclamation.
This celebration is just the latest example of what makes shopping at Just Fabulous so much fun. And why it attracts visitors and locals from near and far. While champagne may not flow every day – champagne is poured quite often, however, at many of the book signings Monkarsh arranges with featured authors like Anne Rice, Barbara Sinatra and Michael York, and at other special events -- the store’s ambiance and merchandise is always bubbly.
“Wow. This is so fabulous,” is a phrase I hear frequently from shoppers, and that I exclaim myself as I peruse the eclectic inventory from books and cards to home décor. Whatever you want in the way of Palm Springs-ish gifts for others and yourself you’ll find here. “We have the best selection of coffee table-style celebrity, architecture and design books in town and harder-to-find editions like the current signed copies of Greg Gorman’s new book Greg Gorman Private Works 2000-2015 and signed copies of Rich Little’s Little by Little – People I’ve Known and Been,” Preston Long, Just Fabulous store manager, told me. Not to mention the irresistibly whimsical cat and doggie books and stylish cook books.
Oh so hip wall art includes iconic photos by renowned photographers-to-the-stars. The store is currently featuring Matthew Ehrmann, a Los Angeles-based photographer known for his Route 66 work, and photos and art by Chris Burbach exemplifying his unique perspective of Palm Springs architecture and iconic locations.
Unique mid-century inspired furniture and home décor is another Just Fabulous specialty. “We’ve partnered with a local craftsman to create beautiful one-of-a-kind ball clocks in the spirit of the iconic Nelson Ball Clock,” Long said. The greeting cards are sweet or sassy or irreverent and always Palm Springs perfect -- for every occasion. The coffee mugs are equally wonderful. Inside the “Gallery Space,” you’ll find trendy Palm Springs-themed items from t-shirts to postcards.
But back to the party. And proof that Just Fabulous is an integral part of Palm Springs culture. The Gand Band is more than a local favorite musical group. Gary and Joan Gand are movers-and-shakers within Palm Springs’ mid-century modern movement and Gary’s book, Julius Shulman: Chicago Mid-century Modernism, is carried at Just Fabulous.
So let’s all wish Monkarsh another 10 years and more of Just Fabulous success. Then step out into the garden courtyard of The Corridor, the Uptown Design District shopping complex anchored by Just Fabulous, and enjoy healthy clean organic cuisine from tacos and salads to burgers and wine at the Mod Café; eye-catching jewelry, apparel and cultural gift items at Etcetera (www. Etcetcsales.com), and other of The Corridor’s (www.palmspringscorridor.com) delightful shops and eateries.
