Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism reaches Chinese travelers with launch of WeChat Account

Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism announced today the launch of its official international account on WeChat, leveraging  China’s most important digital communications platform to raise awareness of Palm Springs as a premiere destination for Chinese travelers. With a 93 percent download rate among Chinese smartphone users, WeChat goes beyond the function of a simple messaging app; it acts as an ecosystem within itself that includes e-commerce, point-of-sale integration, customer service, and complete social engagement capabilities.

The Bureau of Tourism is active on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest, and by joining the WeChat platform, Palm Springs now has the additional opportunity to engage with 962 million monthly active users. This decision to engage with the Chinese audience on WeChat in Mandarin demonstrates Palm Springs California’s commitment to identify and best serve the needs of their Chinese visitors and take the lead in the growing trend of Chinese visitors to the sunny destination.

“Palm Springs is eager to welcome more Chinese visitors,” said Mary Jo Ginther, Director of Tourism for Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism. “We look forward to utilizing WeChat to spread the word about our 350 days of sunshine, distinctive mid-century architecture, designer shopping and abundance of hotel options to China’s large base of sophisticated travelers.”

The Bureau of Tourism’s increased proactive efforts within the Chinese market come at the heels of recently-released data showing strong visitation number into Los Angeles and California from the Chinese market. In 2016, Los Angeles became the first city within the United States to welcome more than 1 million travelers from China, bumping the Chinese market to California’s #1 overseas and fastest growing market. In addition, China is also the fastest growing international market for Palm Springs.

Palm Springs California’s account will provide WeChat users information about the best hotels in the area, shopping areas, restaurants, sightseeing and will highlight other information that will help guests make the most of their visit.
