Since the 1920’s, visionary modernist architects have designed sleek, modern homes that have embraced the desert environment. Driving in from the north, it’s hard to miss the iconic Tramway Gas station designed by Albert Frey and Robson C. Chambers, now home to the city’s bustling Visitor Information Center.

Nellie Coffman, Thomas O’Donnel, George Welwood Murray, Cornelia White and more are all early names in the donation of land and development of unique properties in Palm Springs.

Stewart Williams and Hugh Kaptor all contributed to the classic mid-century architectural design we value today. William Krisel contributed his iconic “butterfly” roof houses and Charles Dubois created the distinctive “Swill Miss” design. Sunnylands Center & Gardens, open to the public free from Thursday through Sunday, offers visitors information about the history and cultural significance of Sunnylands, the historic mid-century modern estate that was the winter residence of Ambassadors Walter and Leonore Annenberg. The building, designed by Frederick Fisher and Partners, is surrounded by nine acres of gar-dens planted with more than 70,000 arid-resistant plants and trees.
