Did you know some Palm Springs retailers offer discounts for Mother’s Day? It’s true! You probably won’t see any “sale” signs. It’s a best-kept secret -- Mother’s Day discounts are more a courtesy to those in the know – and those-in-the-know don’t tell.
But I will; so here’s where to go:
From fine jewelry at 25 percent off to trendy fashions and retro collectables – you can add the thrill of the deal to the pleasure of shopping for Mom – and perhaps yourself. Plus – you and your Mom (and aunts, brothers, sisters, husbands and girl friends) can have a shopping spree right on Mother’s Day Sunday, May 13 – because most Palm Springs shops are open seven days a week.
GOLD (that’s the name of the jewelry shop at 190 S. Palm Canyon Drive in the heart of downtown). Estate jewelry, fine jewelry and watches are all 25 percent off during the week leading up to Mother’s Day and on Mother’s Day Sunday, said owner Kristen Eldar. If you’ve been in Gold, you’ll know this is a significant opportunity to treat your Mom to a beautiful piece of jewelry you might otherwise not be able to afford.
Dollsville Dolls & Bearsville Bears, 296 N. Palm Canyon Drive, www.dollsville.com; is a mother-daughter boutique (how perfect is that!) specializing in top-line collectible dolls and stuffed animals. Yvonne McBride-Bluto, the daughter, is giving 10 percent off everything in the store in the week leading up to May 13, just ask. (It’s closed Sundays.) Don’t confuse this with a toy store – it isn’t. It is one of the few spots you’ll find all 300 varieties of the coveted Madame Alexander dolls, new Steiff stuffed animals and – Baby Boomers rejoice -- new Ginny and her sister, Jill, dolls. Who knew they even still made Ginny dolls? But Cheryl McBride, the mom, says Ginny dolls are a hot seller.
Travelers Boutique & Luggage Shop (it’s heavy on apparel and light on luggage), 261 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, is featuring 10 percent off everything the week before Mother’s Day. Newly moved from a chic shop in Palm Desert, co-owner and fashion-buyer Sachee Asika stocks her store with fashionable Cache-style resort wear – at lower prices – fun accessories including large good-looking animal-themed sterling silver belt buckles – I couldn’t decide between the tiger face or the alligator so at $55 each, I bought both.
Dazzles, 1035 N. Palm Canyon Drive, the oh so fun specialist in vintage 40s, 50s and 60s jewelry, knick knacks, furniture and home décor, is offering 5 percent off everything during the week before and on Mother’s Day. Ask owner Mike Sauls for the Mother’s Day discount. Mike told me he gets lots of moms and their families on Mother’s Day. “Mother’s young and old love the jewelry."
Of course Palm Springs has all the Mother’s Day must-haves: See’s Candies, 144 S. Palm Canyon Drive. Bungalow Rose Florist, 170 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, www.bungalowroseflorist.com. Just Fabulous, 515 N. Palm Canyon Drive, www.bjustfabulous.com; for Palm Springs-perfect Mother’s Day cards and books and gifts. They just got in a new line of Icon brand purses and bags, $20 to $300.
